Microsoft and Consip Spa, Italy’s IT services and procurement agency, have signed on February 11th in Rome a Security Cooperation Program (SCP) agreement, the first such agreement struck by Microsoft with an Italian entity. Through the agreement signed by Danilo Broggi, CEO of Consip Spa, and Pietro Scott Jovane, CEO of Microsoft Italia, Consip will provide consultancy and support to Italy’s Ministry of the Economy and Finance in the management of the Microsoft software purchased on behalf of Italian government bodies. Consip has developed through the years a significant know-how and experience in this field with the work of the Unitŕ Locale di Sicurezza (ULS) that the company set up in 2006. Currently, another 44 institutions worldwide – ministries, national security agencies and CERTs (Computer Emergency Response Teams) –participate in the program. The SCP is based on the cooperation between Microsoft and Governments and public bodies in charge of preventing cyber-attacks and entails the sharing of information that will increase the effectiveness of the processes that ensure the security of systems and software. Through this agreement, Microsoft will provide information on security metrics, vulnerabilities, attack indicators and mitigation tools, as well as training in security. Both signatory parties will share details on specific incidents, product feedback and will cooperate in the dissemination of information in case of emergencies. The agreement will provide benefits in the containment of security and economic risks caused by IT attacks and will increase both the effectiveness of responses and know-how in the area of prevention of IT attacks and incidents.
